"Not Bach (stream), but Sea should be his name!" In spite of Beethoven's appreciative metaphor, it was rivers that inspired cellist Rudi Leopold to his twelve cello homage to Bach. In the Amazon, Heitor Villa-Lobos researched the effect on the indigenous Brazilian people of pieces by Bach played on cello. On the river Scheltd, a swan led the knight Lohengrin to Brabant. In the Seine, Debussy discovered a submerged Cathedral.
