The Mariahilferkirche is part of the Minorites Monastery and one of the most impressive buildings located on the right side of the River Mur, a district once located in the suburbs of Graz. On a property given to the Minorites by Prince Johann Seyfried von Eggenberg, the Order of the Minorites, which had been established in Graz in 1239, commissioned the building of the monastery and the church; the original façade of the church had been designed by Pietro de Pomis. Today’s church façade in late-Baroque style and the two towers were constructed according to the plans by Joseph Hueber between 1742 and 1744. Since 1783 the church of the Minorites Monastery has also been used as a parish church; today it is still run by the Order of the Minorites.

Did you know that Giovanni Pietro de Pomis not only designed the Mariahilferkirche, but is also buried inside the church? His tomb is located at one of the nave pillars in the church.
