Serhan Aytan

ebru painter

Ebru or marbling is a traditional Turkish and Islamic art dating back to the fifteenth century and can be described briefly as waterface painting. The Turkish word Ebru, meaning clouds, describes the artist's own inner world. Patterns, which take shape on water, are fixed when they are transferred to paper or other materials, which can be used for a variety of purposes. As it is akin to abstract painting and contemporary graphic art, nowadays marbling is often framed and hung.

Serhan Aytan was born 1962 in Istanbul. 1976 he began to study oud at the State University of Music in Istanbul. During his studies he explored the playing techniques of Tanburi Cemil Bey, Serif Muhiddin Targan, and Yorgo Bacanos - three famous oud masters. Hence he developed his own special technique which made him a celebrated oud virtuoso himself. Many guest performances in Turkey and abroad. After finishing his studies he became member of the State Orchestra of classical turkish music in Istanbul (1987).

But Serhan Aytan is engaged in ebru painting, too. His teacher was Mustafa Düzgünman, one of the last great masters of this art form. In 1993 he had his first big Vernissage. Serhan Aytan is married and father of a daughter.
