Bork-Frithjof Smith, born in Hannover, began his musical education with the recorder, the violoncello, and the trumpet at the age of five year. At the age of twelfe he discovered the cornet which became his main instrument more and more. He went to Basel to study Early Music at the Schola Cantorum Basiliensis (main subject cornet with Bruce Dickey) and graduated in 1999.

In 1997 he founded the ensemble "Les Cornets Noirs" together with Gebhard David which won the third prize at a competition in Bruges immediately. In 2004 the first CD recording followed (with works by Giovanni Legrenzi), which was highly acclaimed by the press. He is member of the Consort of Seaverall Friends, too.

For years Bork-Frithjof Smith has been playing together with numerous renowned Early Music groups such as La Fenice, AKADEMIA, musica fiata, Huelgas, His Majestys Sagbutts & Cornetts, Weserrenaissance, La Petite Bande, Concerto Copenhagen, Freitagsakademie, and musica fiorita. He has been performing at important festivals all over Europe, in Israel, in North and South America.
